Pubs in Melbourne?

It all started with The Duke…

Established in 1853, The Duke is the oldest licensed pub in Melbourne.

We’re located in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, opposite The Forum and within easy walking distance of Federation Square, Flinders Street Station and the famous MCG sporting precinct.

We might have had some updates to our look along the way, but we have maintained our heritage, plus our friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and iconic status.

The Duke’s history

Built in 1850 and licensed in 1853, our landmark venue has a rich and fascinating history spanning more than 160 years.

The hotel was named after Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley (aka the Duke of Wellington). Wellesley famously led the British forces to defeat Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and went on to become British Prime Minister in 1828.

We’ve had many colourful licensees, including football hero Brian ‘the Whale’ Roberts. The saying “Have an ale with the Whale” resonates strongly with many Melbournians and is just one of the many pieces of history that have contributed to The Duke’s iconic reputation.
